A Day of New Beginnings

What a beautiful day of new beginnings it was for the 17th anniversary of the Lexington Medical Center Heart & Sole Women’s Five Miler! More than 1,300 fabulous females from all across South Carolina and neighboring states registered to try out our brand new course. Race day couldn’t have been any prettier and was the perfect backdrop to raise awareness about the most important health issue women face today — heart disease.

Congratulations to the new course record set by Sara Ashton of Daniel Island, S.C., who finished in a blistering 28:34, a pace of 5:43 per mile. Last year’s defending champion Shawanna White of Columbia, S.C., came in right on her heels in an impressive time of 28:39. PRs were set by our runners right and left as they enjoyed this year’s flatter, faster course.

We’re So Proud of You

Although our event attracts many elite runners, the majority of women who participate in Heart & Sole aren’t your typical athletes.  They’re women who may be finishing a three- or five-mile walk or run for the first time. They’re not entirely sure they can accomplish such a goal, but they know a women’s-only event like ours gives them a great opportunity to try.  They also know they’ll receive the kind of encouragement and support that can only come from hundreds of other women just like themselves. I applaud these women for their accomplishments on Saturday and hope their experience inspires them to make a lifetime of healthy choices.

Thanks to Our Fabulous Sponsors

The Heart & Sole Women’s Five Miler wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of Lexington Medical Center. We’re grateful to them for providing beautiful finisher medals to all our participants and for making this year’s event so special. We also thank WIS News 10 for their wonderful promotion and for helping call attention to the critical health issue of heart disease in women.

Our health and wellness expo, sponsored by Live Fearless BlueCross and BlueShield South Carolina, featured multiple booths brimming with activity and valuable health information. Dick’s Sporting Goods made our race results scoreboard possible, and Edible Arrangements made our day extra sweet again by providing delicious chocolate-dipped strawberries. We’re also grateful to the numerous businesses that offered in-kind contributions and door prizes.

Save the Date—April 20, 2019

We’re already making plans for next year’s event. I hope you’ll join us on Saturday, April 20, 2019, when we do it all over again.  Bring your mothers, daughters and girlfriends and take part in South Carolina’s premier women’s-only road race and walk. We’ll be waiting for you with our arms wide open!
